Of course, this isn’t an altogether new thing – the 1960’s Batman series, Smallville and Lois & Clark (among others) all pre-empted society’s current obsession with small screen superheroics. For the last few years, Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, The Walking Dead and Daredevil have been refining this age-old formula for transferring primary coloured panels into addictive televisual entertainment.
Now, the genre has reached something of a critical mass, with no less than 48 comic-book-inspired projects currently on the slates of various broadcast networks and online platforms.
