“Jessica Jones Showrunner Says Season 2 Will Be A ‘Personal Story’”

“For everyone that binged season 1 of the Marvel/Netflix team up show Jessica Jones, season 2’s expected 2017 air date is a long haul wait away. The comic giant and streaming service currently have a several pronged, interconnecting melange of superhero shows in the works, culminating with a combined Defenders series, due to film back to back with Jessica Jones season 2 next year. So there is much to look forward to.

The stars and showrunners of Jessica Jones are just as excited about what is in store for the tough, reluctant hero and her friends for season 2 – and have revealed a few choice hints and their own ideals about the action to come.

Season 1 introduced the titular lead character (Krysten Ritter) as a suffering survivor dealing with post-traumatic stress induced by her enforced relationship with captor and series nemesis Kilgrave (David Tennant). Netflix took a characteristically ballsy approach to the darker aspects of Jessica’s trauma and its consequences, giving the series a tough, film noir influence that contrasted to the technicolour high action elements often associated with the superhero genre and earned the series critical acclaim.

This humanistic, realist approach was showcased in Netflix’s first Marvel offering, Daredevil, and has paved the way for upcoming series featuring connecting Marvel characters Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Punisher.  The heart and soul of Jessica Jones was Ritter’s complex portrayal of the character with superhuman strengths, human flaws, vulnerabilities and an endearingly petulant attitude. Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg has shared her ideals for season 2 with ET, describing her views of the show and how Jessica will respond to her Hell’s Kitchen superhero contemporaries within this growing narrative landscape:

“Jessica Jones, her journey is a very personal one, it’s very intimate. So, the guys coming in to take over the city, she doesn’t really care, she’s like ‘Take us down, I just need to pay my rent.’ Whatever we do, it will be personal to her. It will be a personal story.”
